Teenage son of prominent Chinese tenor on trial for gang rape

BEIJING, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- The teenage son of a renowned Chinese tenor is among five youths who went on trial in Beijing Wednesday for gang rape, police insiders said.

The insiders told China's official Xinhua news that the son of Li Shuangjiang, head of the music department at People's Liberation Army Academy of Arts, was one of the suspects arrested in February for the gang rape of a young woman identified only as Yang.

She told police she was taken to a hotel and gang raped after drinking with the young men in a bar Feb. 17.

Her lawyer said she will not participate in the trial.

Because the case involves juveniles, the trial is being heard in private session, the court said.
