Iranians study legal action against U.S. for 1953 coup

TEHRAN, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Iranian lawmakers are fast-tracking a bill that requires their government to sue the United States for its involvement in Iran's 1953 coup.

During an open session of Parliament, lawmakers voted to hold detailed discussions on the bill Wednesday, Iran's Press TV reported.

The action follows the release of newly declassified documents offering more details on how the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency orchestrated the overthrow of Prime Minister Mohammed Mosaddeq 60 years ago.

The documents tell how British and U.S. intelligence agencies initiated a coup by the Iranian military Aug. 15, 1953, setting off a chain of events that led to the overthrow of Mosaddeq four days later.

The fast-track bill being discussed by Iranian lawmakers calls on the government to set up a panel to estimate the financial and spiritual damage and losses to the country and seek reparations, the Fars News Agency reported.
