25 killed by Boko Haram Islamic sect in Nigeria

DAWASHI, Nigeria, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Attacks by suspected members of Boko Haram, an Islamist sect, killed at least 25 people in the village of Dawashi, Nigeria, officials said.

The victims were civilian members of the Nigeria's Joint Task Force from Maiduguri, Nigeria, the Nigerian news broadcaster Channels Television reported.

Lt. Haruna Sani, of the military Multi National Joint Task Force, said the civilians entered the village in search of Boko Haram members Tuesday when they were fired upon by sect members. Sani added additional and heavily armed troops were sent to the region, in northeastern Nigeria at the intersection of the country's border with Chad and Niger, known to be a Boko Haram stronghold.
