Thomas Boatwright was also united with a girlfriend he had in 1984, TheLocal.se reported.
In February, police found Boatwright unconscious in a motel room in Palm Springs.
He later woke up at the motel, and began speaking Swedish and insisting his name was Johan Ek.
But his passport and driving license indicated he was from the United States and that Johan Ek was not his real name, The Local.se reported.
Doctors diagnosed him with transient global amnesia, a condition associated with memory loss that is triggered by emotional or physical trauma.
Police and the media began attempting to connect fragments of his life before the coma, and old friends and family began contacting him.
Boatwright insisted he wanted to live in Sweden, and was flown there Tuesday.
The ticket was paid for by the Riverside County Department of Mental Health.
His ex-girlfriend, Ewa Espling, met him at the airport.
"I just want to try and remember the people who were close to me," he said.
