ROUGEMONT, Quebec, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- A Rougemount, Quebec, apple orchard owner said he discovered 140 newly planted trees were stolen from his farm.
The young saplings were taken Friday night from the farm near Montreal, said orchard owner Jeannot Alix.
"The people who did this are idiots. The trees won't survive, this time of year. They must be drying out right now. They did it all for nothing," he said.
The Alix family told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. trees have occasionally been stolen from the orchard, but never before on this scale.
Alix said the value of the trees is about $1,700, but about $5,000 when the cost of labor and lost profits are included.
Provincial police said there were no leads to pursue.
"It was an isolated incident that happened overnight. There is absolutely no evidence to allow us to continue the investigation," said Surete du Quebec investigator Sgt. Stephane Manuri.
