Pilots taking off from Moscow airport attacked with lasers

MOSCOW, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- The pilots of two planes taking off from a Moscow airport early Tuesday said laser beams were pointed at their cockpits in an attempt to blind them.

Both incidents occurred near Moscow's Vnukovo airport, RIA Novosti said.

The first event took place shortly after midnight when a laser beam allegedly hit the cockpit of a plane bound for Astana, police said.

The second incident happened less than an hour later, when a flight to Moscow was targeted shortly after takeoff.

No one was harmed in either incident, officials said.

The attacks are the latest in a string of similar incidents.

In the last week, at least five planes have been targeted by laser pointers in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
