Aug. 17, 2013 at 3:36 PM

KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- At least two people were killed Saturday in a suicide bombing at a hospital, and at least 20 were killed in attacks elsewhere in Afghanistan, officials said.

Nine road workers and a police officer were killed in western Herat province Friday, CNN reported. Insurgents first exchanged fire with officers at a police post and then fired at a tent camp housing construction workers.

Also Friday, three women were killed by a roadside bomb in southern Helmand province. Another roadside bomb in Helmand killed a man, woman and three children.

Fawad Askari, a spokesman for the regional governor in western Farah province, said the suicide bomber struck a civilian hospital in the Farah Rud district Saturday morning.

A United Nations report said civilian deaths in Afghanistan jumped 23 percent in the first half of 2013, driven mostly by increased use of improvised explosive devices.
