"We proposed holding the talks at the Peace House in the South Korean part of Panmunjom," a unification ministry official said.

South Korean President Park Geun-hye proposed the resumption of family reunions during her Liberation Day address Thursday, Yonhap reported.

About 73,000 people in South Korea have asked to meet with their relatives in the North, and 80 percent of those who have asked for reunions are 70 or older.

So far, there have been 18 reunions, with the most recent taking place in 2010, Yonhap reported.

"The meeting is centered on working out the many details needed for the family reunions so that they can be held around the Chuseok holidays," the official said.

Chuseok is considered a Korean equivalent of Thanksgiving and falls on Sept. 19 this year.
