"No one," Abbott told a gathering of the Liberal party in Melbourne, "however smart, however well-educated, however experienced ... is the suppository of all wisdom."
What he meant to say, instead of "suppository," was "repository," the Sydney Morning Herald reported Monday.
Within half an hour "suppository" was trending on Twitter alongside digitally altered images of Abbott with captions such as "know your enema" and "squeezing out a policy."
The Melbourne gathering came one day after Abbott faced Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in a debate in front of a panel of journalists in Canberra.
The election is scheduled for Sept. 7.
