MONT-ST-GREGOIRE, Quebec, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- A second-generation hot air balloon pilot was killed in an accident in Canada Sunday, a festival official said.

The victim of the accident near Mont-St.Maxime Trepanier was identified by Marie-Claude Beauvais, head of marketing with the hot air balloon festival in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, as Maxime Trepanier, 26, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Trepanier, a father of two, had been in in critical condition when taken to a hospital about 7:30 a.m. local time, the CBC said.

"It's a tragic day," said Beauvais, who added Trepanier's father was also a hot air balloon pilot.

Following the crash, the 30-year-old festival grounded its balloons for the day, the CBC said.

Provincial police were to investigate the accident.
