KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- U.S. officials allege that an Afghan trucking company used graft and padded bills to skim some $77 million from military logistics contracts.
The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction issued a report accusing Hikmatullah Shadman of paying off officials and rigging bids in order to win 5,421 individual contracts to haul military supplies on behalf of the U.S. military.
The SIGAR office said in a written statement it would track down as much of the money as possible.
Afghanistan's Khaama Press said Sunday that a freeze on Shadman's bank accounts was lifted by the Afghan government for unknown reasons. Releasing the accounts allowed Shadman to transfer millions of dollars out of the country to accounts in the United Arab Emirates.
