India imposes curfew after Kashmir demonstrations turn violent

SRINAGAR, India, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Indian authorities say they have imposed an indefinite curfew in parts of Kashmir after pro-Pakistan demonstrations turned violent.

Hundreds of Kashmiris carrying the Pakistan flag turned out in the streets of Srinagar following Eid prayers, The News International reported Saturday.

Demonstrators hurled stones at Indian security forces, who fired tear gas into the crowd. Several protesters were injured in the Friday incident.

In the district of Kashtawar, one person was killed and several others injured when armed men from one community attacked reportedly peaceful demonstrators.

A leader of the Hurriyat political alliance has called for a strike.

Fearing large-scale demonstrations, government officials have detained most of the Hurriyat leadership.
