Military order closes Eilat, Israel, airport

EILAT, Israel, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- The airport of the resort city of Eilat, Israel, near the Egyptian border, was briefly shut down after the military ordered the closure of surrounding airspace.

"Security assessments" based on "intelligence and other regional developments" prompted the order, a statement by the Israeli military said.

It was unclear if the closure was related to the warning this week of an alleged plot by al-Qaida to attack Western targets in the Middle East and North Africa, the Israeli news website Ynetnews said, noting on the Egyptian side of the border, the army continues to seek Islamist terrorists in the Sinai peninsula.

The airport reopened after it was closed for two hours, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported.
