Berlusconi calls for justice reform or early elections

ROME, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Former Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi said justice reforms must be made or he will push for early elections.

Berlusconi's comments came Friday during an address to members of his People of Freedom party, after Italy's supreme court upheld his tax-fraud jail term Thursday, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.

"We have to ask for elections soon to win. Let's reflect on the best road to take to reach this objective," Berlusconi said.

Police in Milan began the procedure Friday for confiscating Berlusconi's passport, in accordance with the supreme court's ruling. The court banned the ex-premier from traveling out of the country, stripped him of eligibility to run in future elections and revoked his status as senator-for-life.
