Aug. 3, 2013 at 1:47 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Malaysian authorities said they were searching for survivors after a boat carrying 40 Indonesians sank off Malaysia's southern Johor state.

The boat was carrying the Indonesians, believed to be illegal workers in Malaysia, to their home country to celebrate the end of the fasting month of Ramadan when it capsized in rough waters and sank about midnight Friday, Voice of America reported.

Malaysian coast guard, police and fishermen had rescued eight survivors, DailyBhaskar.com reported.

This was second incident in Malaysian waters in two weeks, the BBC said. A woman drowned and 27 were rescued when a boat sank July 18.
