Lacoursiere said a SWAT team moved in after a robot found the man was no longer armed.

"We take the least lethal method that we can," he said.

The standoff began Tuesday when the man allegedly threatened two Hydro-Quebec employees with a gun. Police said they had come to his house in Cote-St. Luc to change the meter.

Police said a number of firearms were registered to the address.

The identity of the man was not released. A neighbor said police referred to him as a former professor during attempts to reach him by loudspeaker and that a message from his daughter was played.
