MOSCOW, July 30 (UPI) -- A large cache of homemade explosives has been found in the North Caucasus Republic of Dagestan, Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee said Tuesday.

Russia's Federal Security Service received information that led agents to the bomb-making material after detaining the leader of the rebel Buinaksk group, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported.

They found the equivalent of 110 pounds of TNT stored in five paint jars and two metal pipes during a search of a property belonging to the state fishing agency in the Dagestan capital of Makhachkala, the terrorism panel said.

An Islamist insurgency that originated in the republic of Chechnya has spread across the North Caucasus in recent years.

Attacks on security forces, police and civilians occur regularly in Dagestan.
