Bridge ramp collapses in Seoul, kills two

SEOUL, July 30 (UPI) -- Police said two Chinese workers were killed and a third was injured in South Korea Tuesday when a section of a bridge ramp under construction collapsed.

A 47-meter-long, 190-ton steel structure fell from the entrance ramp onto workers shortly after 1 p.m., Yonhap News Agency said.

Four workers were on the site in Seoul pouring concrete to set up a protective barrier on the ramp at the time of the collapse, police said.

"One of those killed is still buried under the wreckage. Some 50 rescue workers are trying to recover his body," Lee Seung-il, an official of Seoul's Gangseo Fire Station, told Yonhap.

Police said they are investigating the cause of the accident, and the city government said it will begin an investigation into the firms in charge of the construction.

The construction on the entrance ramp began in 2005 and was estimated to cost $98.6 million.

The work was to be completed next June, part of an effort to relieve traffic congestion.

The bridge links the western part of Seoul to Gyeonggi province and to Incheon International Airport, Yonhap said.
