Robber steals $53 million in jewelry from Cannes, France, hotel

CANNES, France, July 28 (UPI) -- Police said an armed bandit stole jewels worth $53 million Sunday morning from a jewelry exhibition at a hotel in Cannes, France.

The gunman evaded security and escaped with a briefcase, Sky News said.

The robbery took place during a jewelry exhibition at the Carlton Hotel in the city.

The hotel's management has declined to comment, Radio France Internationale said.
