Pakistani spokesman says Taliban, Afghan peace talks to resume

ISLAMABAD, July 26 (UPI) -- Peace talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government will resume once a dispute over a Taliban office in Qatar is resolved, a Pakistani spokesman said.

Spokesman Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry of the Pakistan Foreign Office said reconciliation between the Afghan government and the Afghan Taliban is the only way to achieve stability in the region, and said he was optimistic talks could be renewed.

Peace talks were halted after the Afghan government objected to the opening of a Taliban office in Doha, Qatar. It identified itself as an office of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, and Afghan officials called it a step toward setting up a government-in-exile, the Afghan news agency Khaama Press said.
