MADRID, July 26 (UPI) -- A British mountain climber who disappeared July 17 was found dead in the Picos de Europa mountain range in northern Spain, authorities said.

The 24-year-old man, whose name was not reported, was found Tuesday evening near the hamlet of Pena Vieja, ThinkSpain reported.

Rescuers found the man's backpack, which led them to this body.

The man had disappeared while he and other Britons were climbing in the region. At one point, the rest of the group decided to head back but the man decided to keep climbing alone, planning to meet later with the other climbers.

A land and air search started after he was reported missing.
