China readies updated version of disputed islands game

BEIJING, July 24 (UPI) -- Developers of an online military game based on a territorial dispute between Japan and China are planning to release an update next month.

The game called Mission of Honor features an aircraft carrier and the disputed Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

In its original version a soldier named Qiangjun boards China's first aircraft carrier Liaoning with his comrades and fights invaders in military bases on the islands.

Promotional material for the updated version says players will be able to fight against Japanese opponents on island maps and new weapons and character outfits will be available, the South China Morning Post reported.

"Players entering the game will fight alongside Chinese armed forces and use their weapons to tell the Japanese that 'Japan must return our stolen territory,'" the press release said.

The Diaoyu Islands, known as Senkaku in Japan, are a group of uninhabited islands controlled by Japan since 1895. They are close to key shipping lanes and rich fishing grounds.
