Norwegian neo-Nazi released from French custody

PARIS, July 19 (UPI) -- French police Friday released a Norwegian neo-Nazi heavy metal musician who was arrested in France earlier this week, officials said.

Varg Vikernes, 40, was arrested Tuesday, along with his French wife, Marie Chachet, Radio France Internationale reported.

The Paris-based national anti-terrorist police brigade ordered their arrests after Chachet purchased five rifles, officials said. The purchase was made legally.

"There was a sufficient range of clues and elements to justify the arrests and detentions," said interior ministry spokesperson Pierre-Henry Brandet.

Vikernes, who served a 15-year prison term in Norway for stabbing a guitarist to death, was released Friday after investigators were unable to uncover any concrete plans for terrorism, The Norway Post reported.

However, Vikernes is scheduled to appear in court in upcoming weeks for charges of violating of French racism laws.
