Italian police arrest man trying to smuggle 30,000 illegal cigarettes

ROME, July 16 (UPI) -- A 37-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after Italian authorities said he attempted to smuggle nearly 30,000 contraband cigarettes into the country.

Customs officers and finance police said Lucio Giannone had hidden 29,927 cigarettes under a load of watermelons he was bringing in from Greece, the ANSA news agency reported.

The merchandise, which weighed 12,000 pounds, was valued at about $2 million.

Police say Giannone's nervous behavior tipped them off. He was arrested and his vehicle, cigarettes and watermelons were confiscated.
