French officials arrest admirer of mass murderer Anders Brevik

CORREZE, France, July 16 (UPI) -- French intelligence officials have arrested a neo-Nazi heavy metal musician suspected of sympathizing with Norwegian mass killer Anders Brevik.

Kristian "Varg" Vikernes was arrested Tuesday morning at his farm in Correze, France, by the Central Directorate of Interior Intelligence. Vikernes is suspected of being one of 530 Brevik supporters who received a copy of the convicted mass killer's 1,200-page manifesto.

In an online posting, Vikernes chastised Brevik, who killed 77 people in a bombing and shooting rampage in Oslo, Norway, for killing more white people than Muslims.

It was unclear whether Vikernes was plotting any kind of Brevik-style attack or whether Vikernes had attempted to procure guns or explosives. French radio network RTL said Vikernes' wife is a member of a shooting club and legally owns guns.

Vikernes, a black metal musician and writer, was convicted of killing a rival musician in his native Norway in the 1990s, the BBC said. He was released from prison in 2009. He married a French woman and moved to that country.
