Gunmen kill four police officers in Russia

BURSHI, Russia, July 14 (UPI) -- Unidentified gunmen killed four police officers Sunday in the republic of Dagestan in Russia, the Interior Ministry said.

The officers, who were part of an investigative squad, came under attack in the village of Burshi, RIA Novosti said.

"In the first half of the day, the investigative department officers drove to the village of Burshi to investigate a complaint about a theft. On their way back, they came under fire and died of the wounds they sustained," the ministry said.

Two gunmen shot the officers, RIA Novosti said, and authorities are investigating the incident.

Attacks on security forces, police and civilians are reported regularly in Dagestan, RIA Novosti said.
