Ex-S. African President Mbeki: Mandela may be sent home soon

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, July 14 (UPI) -- Thabo Mbeki, a former president of South Africa, said he thinks former President Nelson Mandela will soon be sent home to recuperate.

Mbeki, speaking in Johannesburg Saturday at a memorial lecture for former African National Congress President Zaccheus Mahabane, said he knows Mandela's physicians and they are doing an excellent job, Eye Witness News of South Africa reported.

Mandela has been at the Pretoria Heart Hospital for more than a month, undergoing treatment for a chronic lung infection, Eye Witness News reported.

His condition remains critical although he continues to respond to treatment, Eye Witness News said.

Graca Machel, Mandela's wife, said she feels less anxious about Mandela's condition than she did a week ago.
