Peacekeepers attacked in Sudan; 7 killed, 17 wounded

MANAWASHI, Sudan, July 13 (UPI) -- Militants in Sudan attacked a United Nations convoy Saturday, killing at least seven U.N. peacekeepers and injuring 17 others, U.N. officials s said.

The incident occurred near the peacekeepers' base in Manawashi, north of the southern Darfur state capital of Nyala, CNN reported.

Chris Cycmanick, acting spokesman for the U.N. Mission in Darfur, said the convoy came under heavy gunfire.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
