23 injured in running of the bulls pile-up

PAMPLONA, Spain, July 13 (UPI) -- At least 23 people were hospitalized Saturday after being trampled during the running of the bulls at the San Fermin festival in Pamplona, Spain.

Most of the injuries occurred when 10 half-ton bulls plowed through a pile-up of spectators at the entrance to the bull ring at the end of the run, The Sun reported.

Workers then opened an entrance to an alley running round the bull ring, allowing participants to escape the bulls.

Five of the 23 people hospitalized after the incident suffered serious crush injuries.

A 28-year-old Irish national was in serious condition with asphyxia caused by crush injuries to his chest, the Belfast Telegraph reported.

An American college student and two Spaniards were gored during Friday's running of the bulls.
