CAIRO, July 12 (UPI) -- The United Nations supports an Egyptian government accountable to its people but is concerned about the current situation, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said.
President Mohamed Morsi was ousted last week amid widespread and violent protests, the constitution was suspended and an interim government was established. Meanwhile, Morsi supporters and opponents still clash in huge demonstrations.
In a phone call with Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr, Ban expressed concern about the detentions and arrest warrants issued against leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood -- the party to which Morsi belongs -- and others, the United Nations said Thursday in a release.
A readout of the conversation said Ban reminded Amr of Egypt's international obligations and the need to respect the rights to freedom of association and speech, and the right to due process.
Ban also said there was no place for retribution or exclusion of any major party or community in Egypt, the readout said. He also reiterated support for the aspirations of the Egyptian people and called for a dialogue that includes all members of Egypt's political spectrum to find a way forward.
