Berlusconi: Support for coalition not dependent on appeal in his trial

July 12, 2013 at 1:35 PM   |   Comments

ROME, July 12 (UPI) -- Former Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi said Friday his political party's support for a coalition government should not depend on the outcome of his trials.

Speaking to interviewers from the public television broadcaster RAI3, Berlusconi said leaders of his People of Freedom Party should focus on the country's interests and discount threats to withdraw support for a left-right coalition government in light of his conviction on tax fraud charges.

He said he is confident he will be acquitted in the final appeal of the tax fraud case, scheduled for July 30, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.
