SJUNTORP, Sweden, July 10 (UPI) -- About 1,200 pigs died in a fire at a farm in western Sweden in what investigators suspect was an arson attack, an emergency services official said.

Most of the pigs that died in the Tuesday blaze in Sjuntorp were piglets, the Swedish news agency TT reported Wednesday.

"We don't know the exact number yet, but it is probably around 1,200," Jonas Gustafsson at the emergency services in Trollhättan told the local TTELA daily.

The fire consumed two barns, but firefighters were able to prevent it from spreading to another two barns and a residential building, TT reported.

About 240 sows and 640 piglets were saved. Police have launched an investigation into the fire.
