Homeless Italian man serves house arrest on Milan sidewalk

MILAN, Italy, July 10 (UPI) -- A homeless man who admits to being a thief says he is serving his house arrest sentence on a sidewalk in Milan, Italy.

Domenico Codispoti, 48, whose police record includes attempted robbery, petty theft and drug dealing in Milan, received the unusual sentence in 2006, two years of special surveillance and house arrest, to be served on the sidewalks of the city.

Every evening at 9 p.m., Codispoti unrolls a sleeping bag in the same spot, and stays there until 7 a.m., with police checking to see if he is "home," the Italian newspaper La Stampa reported Wednesday.

He will remain on the street until April 2014 because of several other arrests since the initial sentence.

"I have always done my stealing at night," he said. "That's why the court gave me this sentence. Since I don't have a house, there was no other solution left. During the night I can't move."
