ISTANBUL, Turkey, July 10 (UPI) -- The death toll from the Gezi Park protests rose to five Wednesday with a death of a student who was injured at the Istanbul, Turkey, park, officials said.

Ali Ismail Korkmaz, 19, died Wednesday at the Osmangazi University Hospital in Eskisehir, Today's Zaman said. He was attacked by a group of people while trying to escape from police at a demonstration June 2.

The other deaths were demonstrators Ethem Sarisuluk, Abdullah Comert and Mehmet Ayvalitas, and police officer Mustafa Sari.

The protests were in response to a government plan to create a replica of Ottoman military barracks in the place of Gezi Park in Istanbul.

Protesters' anger was fueled when police violently stopped a sit-in demonstration at Taksim Square May 31.
