EL KEF, Tunisia, July 9 (UPI) -- Some Tunisian street performers, whose bare chests prompted an attack by audience members, have been released after being charged with public indecency.

The 15 actors were among a group of 19 performing a tribute to an assassinated Tunisian opposition leader in the city of El Kef when some audience members became angry, Tunisia Live reported Tuesday.

They interrupted the show, denounced it as ethically indecent and verbally antagonized the actors.

A lawyer for one of the actors said they were physically attacked and threatened with death.

After appearing before a judge Monday, the actors were released.

Artists and members of the El Kef community have organized a campaign to support the actors.

The local prosecutor has to decide whether to pursue the case.
