KABUL, Afghanistan, July 2 (UPI) -- Afghanistan's capital came under militant attack early Tuesday, leaving at least 10 people dead, including five attackers, authorities said.

One of the attackers set off his truck with explosives at the gate of a NATO suppliers' compound in the capital, CNN reported. The other four then engaged security forces in a gun battle.

Khaama Press said the compound in the Pule-e-Charkhi area of Kabul houses a private foreign logistic company. The report quoted police as saying the four attackers had managed to slip into compound

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the incident which began around 5 a.m., CNN reported.

Four Nepalese guards at the compound, an Afghan civilian and all the five attackers died in the incident, CNN said, quoting a spokesman at the Afghan Interior Ministry.

The gun battle with the Afghan security forces lasted more than an hour, the spokesman said.

CNN said the compound is used by two international logistics firms that supply material to NATO's International Security Assistance Force.

Militants have staged a number of daring attacks lately in the capital despite heavy security. Last week, Taliban militants struck near the gate of the presidential palace, killing three guards, before being killed by security forces.
