PEMBERTON, British Columbia, June 30 (UPI) -- Four people and a dog died in a mid-air collision between a small plane and a glider that scattered debris at a Canadian campsite, police said.
Witnesses on the ground described hearing a "big bang" Saturday then seeing the glider spiral toward the ground near Pemberton, British Columbia. They said they couldn't properly see what happened midair because the trees in the area are so tall, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Saturday.
"The glider hit the ground. You could hear it. You could see the debris in the air, so people started taking cover," said Dan Wall, who was on a bike trail near the campground.
Police said none of the debris hit campers on the ground, though it came close.
The Cessna 150 aircraft involved in the crash continued in the air and crash-landed on the opposite side of the Green River near the campground, Wall said.
Officials said they don't know what caused the crash and they don't know if the Cessna 150 was towing the glider, the CBC reported.
The names of the victims were not reported.
