ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, June 28 (UPI) -- The Megatons to Megawatts nuclear non-proliferation program will be completed later this year, a joint statement Friday from Russia and the United States said.
The final delivery in the 20-year-program, in which 500 metric tons of highly enriched uranium from dismantled Russian nuclear warheads has been sent to the United States for conversion to low enriched uranium and used in U.S. nuclear power plants, is scheduled for November, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported.
A document confirming the final shipment was signed at the International Atomic Agency conference in St. Petersburg, Russia, by Sergei Kirienko, head of the Russian State Atomic Energy Corp. and U.S. Deputy Energy Secretary Daniel Poneman, RIA Novosti said.
