CHONGQING, China, June 28 (UPI) -- A Chinese official was sentenced to 13 years in prison Friday after being convicted of corruption charges that stemmed from his appearance in a sex video.

Lei Zhengfu, a former senior official in China's Chongqing district, was convicted of accepting bribes in his government job to pay off an extortionist who videotaped Lei having sex, Xinhua reported.

A local businessman, Xiao Ye, is facing charges for allegedly luring Lei and other officials into having sex with women, recording the acts, then blackmailing those involved.

The Chongqing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court determined Lei accepted $510,000 from a businessman by the surname of Ming to pay Xiao to keep quiet about the sex tape, Xinhua reported.

The court fined Lei $48,000 in addition to his prison sentence, the BBC reported. His lawyer said he may appeal.

In January, 10 government officials were removed from their positions for being caught in sex videos.
