ISLAMABAD, June 27 (UPI) -- A special committee has been named to investigate whether former Pakistani leader Pervez Musharraf should be tried for treason, officials said Thursday.
Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan informed Parliament the panel, consisting of two directors and two director-generals of the Federal Investigation Agency, will submit its findings in the probe of the former military leader to the government soon, Dawn News reported. The court declined to order the formal arrest of Musharraf since no formal charges have been lodged against him.
Pakistan's Supreme Court has halted its hearing of the treason case against Musharraf indefinitely while it considers whether to set up a special court to hear the case against the former general, who took power in a 1999 military coup and ruled the country until 2008. His invocation of emergency rule and other actions led to the move to have him charged with treason.
