ANKARA, Turkey, June 27 (UPI) -- Nearly 300 children were detained during the recent Gezi Park demonstrations in Turkey, officials said.

A report by the Gundem Cocuk, or Children on the Agenda, Association found that between May 28, when the protests started, and June 25, 294 children were taken into custody, Hurriyet Daily News reported.

Most of the arrests -- 130 of them -- were made in the city of Adana, the report said.

Gundem Cocuk also found that a number of children were exposed to tear gas, pressurized water and noise bombs, and some were beaten with batons. One child was wounded with a bullet, the report said.

Meanwhile, 11 of 13 people arrested in Izmir for their roles in sparking protests there were taken into custody Thursday, Today's Zaman reported.

The suspects, who are charged with provoking protests, damaging public and private property, membership in a terrorist organization and attacking police officers, were jailed pending trial after being questioned by police.

And in Ankara, a judge ordered the release of a police officer accused of killing a protester there, Hurriyet said.

"There is intense evidence that the police officer's action remains within the scope of self-defense. I have a clear conscience. Millions coming together will not influence my decision," Judge Mustafa Aydin, who has been heavily criticized for his ruling, said Wednesday.
