Swedish police urge ban on street racing

HELSINGBORG, Sweden, June 24 (UPI) -- Swedish police urged lawmakers to ban high-speed street racing after a driver crashed during an event in Helsingborg, Sweden.

The crash happened Saturday night; the vehicle veered off the road near a shopping center and landed on its roof, The Local.se reported.

The driver of the vehicle managed to escape uninjured.

"There are hundreds, even thousands of people watching the spectacle," police officer Karim Ottosson told The Local.se. "Then, last weekend, what we were always scared would happen did happen."

Ottosson said there are currently no laws that would help them put an end to the drag racing, forcing officers to patrol four hot-spots every Friday and Saturday night to monitor the races.

"It takes up a lot of our time," Ottosson said. "Which means that if you call in to report a rape, a burglary or an assault, people have to wait that bit longer, especially in the summer when we don't have many staff resources."

Ottosson said he would like to see a law created banning the sport.

"If street racing becomes illegal, we can disband the crowd," Ottosson said.
