Russian thieves steal 17.6 pounds of gold

CHITA, Russia, June 20 (UPI) -- Thieves have stolen a steel box with 17.6 pounds of gold from prospectors in East Siberia's Transbaikal Territory, police said in a statement Thursday.

"A group of unidentified people dug their way under a fence and sneaked to the territory of a small [gold-mining] enterprise," the statement said.

Police told RIA Novosti the perpetrators had found a hidden key for the box.

An investigation was under way.
