Lima rattled by second earthquake this week

LIMA, June 18 (UPI) -- The Lima region was rattled by a 4.6-magnitude earthquake Tuesday, the second shaker to strike the region this week, officials said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the latest temblor was centered 15 miles west-northwest of Callao, Peru, at a depth of about 38 miles. Peruvian news agency Andina said it was a 5.1-magnitude quake on the Richter scale at a depth of 24.8 miles.

Andina said the quake struck at 1:40 p.m. local time and initially caused panic with people running into the streets in Lima. However, there were no immediate reports of injuries or damages.

The news agency said residents of the Peruvian capital experienced a magnitude-4 tremor Monday.

A magnitude-4.1 earthquake hit northern Peru earlier Tuesday. That one was 44 miles southeast of La Libertad at a depth of 26.7 miles.
