Erotic game remains theory in Knox, Sollecito acquittals, court says

PERUGIA, Italy, June 18 (UPI) -- Explaining reasons the acquittals of Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito were overturned, Italy's supreme court suggested the two were engaged in erotic games.

The 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy, could have been the result of a sex game gone wrong, the Court of Cassation theorized. In March the court scrapped the Perugia appeal court's 2011 decision to suppress the sentences Knox and Sollecito received at the original trial in 2009, and ordered a new appeals trial.

Knox, now 25, received a 26-year sentence, and Sollecito, now 29, received a 25-year sentence. Each was convicted of Kercher's murder and served nearly four years before their sentences were overturned, the Italian newspaper Gazetta del Sud reported.

The court said the theory that Kercher died during a sex game was not properly studied during the course of the trial.
