Flooding in India kills 50

NEW DELHI, June 17 (UPI) -- Flooding after two days of monsoon rains in northern India killed 50 people and left hundreds stranded, emergency responders said.

The highland states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh were among the hardest-hit areas, the Press Trust of India reported Monday, with the Yamuna River water levels rising quickly during the storms triggering flash floods.

The Ganges River and its tributaries also swelled, causing 30 of the 50 deaths. Another 19 people were injured and 164 buildings were damaged or destroyed.

The rains also caused landslides, including one that killed a family of five when boulders landed on their home.

Police Inspector General R.K. Vishkarma said hundreds of people were airlifted out of harm's way by the Indian air force in towns across the region.
