Opposition blasts Morsi's position on Syrian uprising

CAIRO, June 16 (UPI) -- Opposition movements in Egypt have accused President Mohamed Morsi of supporting a U.S. agenda in Syria for personal gain.

Egypt's April 6 Movement issued a statement Saturday making the allegations against Morsi, Ahram Online reported.

"We are surprised about Morsi's condemnation of foreign intervention in Syria, being that he also demands a no-fly zone over Syria, which would allow for foreign intervention," said the statement, referring to a speech Morsi' gave Saturday at a conference organized by Islamists in support of the Syrian rebels.

"Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood have no shame in trading on anything, even the blood of martyrs in Syria, in order to win the sympathy of Egyptians," added the statement.

"Morsi's speech reveals that the Syria file has been handed over from Qatar to Saudi Arabia and Egypt and that Morsi is answering America's instructions," added the statement.

In his speech, Morsi said he is severing ties with the Syrian regime under President Bashar Assad.

"The Egyptian people and the army are supporting the Syrian uprising," Ahram Online quoted Morsi saying Saturday in Cairo.

"We have decided to close down the Syrian Embassy in Cairo. The Egyptian envoy in Damascus will also be withdrawn," he said. "The people of Egypt and its army will not leave Syrians until their rights are granted and a newly elected leadership is chosen," he said.

Morsi said he objects to any foreign intervention in the Syrian crisis, but at the same time urged world powers to enforce a no-fly zone over Syria similar to that imposed by NATO forces on Libya. He also called Syria on Hezbollah forces to leave Syrian soil. "Hezbollah must leave Syria, there is no place for Hezbollah in Syria," the website quoted him saying.

"The Egyptian people have stood by the Lebanese people and Hezbollah against the [Israeli] attack in 2006, and today we stand against Hezbollah for Syria," he added.
