President Mahmoud Abbas named Rami Hamdallah, an academic who served as president of An-Najah University for 15 years, to succeed Salam Fayyad as prime minister. Saturday's demonstration was the first since Hamdallah's appointment, the Ma'an News Agency reported.
Khalid Mansour of the Palestinian People's Party told Ma'an the demonstrators were sending a "message to the Hamdallah government telling him we were disappointed by his comments highlighting that he will follow in the former government's footsteps."
The protesters called for cuts in prices and the VAT and an end to all taxation of basic necessities. Mansour also urged the government to re-negotiate or rescind the Paris Protocol, an agreement with Israel on economic cooperation.
