Danish police arrest 39 gang members linked to fire at gang hangout

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, June 14 (UPI) -- Five members of the Bandidos gang have been charged with assault after a fire gutted a building believed to have been the group's hangout, Danish police say.

The five men were allegedly planning to attack members of a rival gang who are believed to have set the fire, The Copenhagen Post reported Thursday.

The arrests bring to 39 the number of people arrested in the fire at an industrial building in Frederikssund early Wednesday. Police said all those arrested have connections to gangs in the region.

Michael Hellensberg, chief superintendent of the Northern Zealand police, said the fire was viewed as an attack against the Bandidos and "a serious escalation of the on-going conflict" between the gangs.

The Bandidos have denied the building was their meeting place.

The fire occurred only a few days after one group of men attacked another group with bats.
