Road activist jailed for failing to yield right of way to officials

MOSCOW, June 12 (UPI) -- A Russian activist has been jailed for 10 days for failing to yield the right of way to an official cortege outside Moscow, his lawyer said.

Vadim Korovin of the Russian Federation of Car Owners was convicted of disobeying a lawful police order, RIA Novosti reported Wednesday.

Traffic police also said Korovin ran over an officer while trying to escape the scene. If it turns out to be true, he faces up to 10 years in jail.

Korovin, 35, is part of a group of motorist rights activists who charge government officials often abuse their road privileges.

He was also among protesters who unsuccessfully tried to set up a tent camp in downtown Moscow during a 2012 rally that ended in mass rioting and clashes with police.
